I own two pairs of these great pants. They run a little on the large size, I have a 30" waist and typically wear 32" pants with room to spare and the M fit me fine. Back when I had a slightly larger waist I got a L and it hung off me. The material is thicker than a light nylon you'll find in most convertible hiking pants so these guys are best for cool morning starts and my go-to pants for backpacking. They also work great as a softshell for skiing with a light baselayer underneath.
I would recommend this product.

My husband started with the Matterhorn shorts and loved them so much, he got 3 pairs of the Matterhorn convertible pants (khaki, brown, and shark).
These pants are the perfect fit. Looser in the thigh (but not overly baggy). Especially nice for those with bigger thigh muscles.
Loves the convertible option. Great for traveling. Absolute favorite go-to pant. Hope MH never stops making the Matterhorn pants or shorts.
I would recommend this product.

Great replacement for the Canyon pants

If any of you are missing the old Canyon pants, this is the replacement.
MH has reworked the pockets in a more horizontal fashion, so that it's harder now for things to slip out of the pockets.
Somebody might missed the versatility of the old "all around" Canyon pockets, but overall, it's better I think.
The fabric is just as solid and warm as the Canyon used to be.
Actually, this pant beats down the "Winter Wander" in terms of winter worthiness.
Highly recommended.

Pockets Need Help but Well Worth It!

I love these pants! I am 5'11" and 155 lbs. and I usually wear a 31x32 jeans with a belt so I was unsure whether to go with a small or medium. Try them on to be sure. I went with a small. I love the way the pants feel. The material feels more rugged and durable than other hiking pants I have seen, which are usually flimsy and paper-esque. Going through the brush I never worry about them ripping or snagging. I can walk in and out of water with the confidence that my pants will be dry soon. The pants don't sag or bunch up. The leg zippers are easy to use. The shorts are a great length - not too short, not too long - resting just on the knee caps. My only qualms with the Matterhorn pants is that the front pockets are too shallow and side zipper pockets are angled in such a way that stuff is guaranteed to fall out if you leave them unzipped, which is to be expected, I guess. Great pants!

Matterhorn Convertible Pants

Worn these on about 5 fall hikes now in temps ranging from 29 to 50 degrees here in the Olympic National Park. Needless to say there has been some brush tramping and a little rock scrambling and these pants perform great! Never any binding or bunching, very comfortable. They also shed water and dry very quickly. The belt is a little chincey so i only gave it 4 stars but it seems to work fine.All in all I would probably buy another pair. Hopefully I get to use them as shorts this coming summer!

Only convertible pant worth wearing

This pant is a perfect example of Mountain Hardwear's standard of reaching above and beyond. First of all, this is the only convertible pant that is actually "convertible"; in other words, the Matterhorn features FULL length shorts. If for no other reason this makes the Matterhorn the only convertible pant worth wearing. Secondly, the new integrated webbing belt is perfect for those wearing a pack or a harness (one less thing to deal with). I almost exclusively wear these because of the belt. The only improvment I suggest is to do away with the velcro on the back pockets and replace them with buttons or folds. The Velcro on your wallet side pocket wears quickly. Seriously every square inch of these pants has been carefully thought out from the deep pockets, to the key fob, to the ankle snaps. A must have for both the casual wearer and the hard core expeditioner.

I had an earlier version of MH convertible pants which I love, but the pant legs zipped off into shorts that are now too short for the style and my students tell me is "sketchy looking" so I put up the big bucks for the MH pants. I have tried other brands that were cheaper, but MH seems to work better than the others, specifically I love the zip pockets and other pockets all out of the way of my waist belt. I like the fleece lining around the waist. Nice weight for backpacking in New England. I carry an insulin pump and placing it in these pockets works better than other pants. I also am also adept at losing things, so the extra key clip in the pocket is a nice feature. Most of all though, the pants fit well and are comfortable. I wore them for 9 days in the White Mountains and they held up well.

good upgrades to a great conv. pant.

I wear these pants all the time, and the new years model has stronger stitching and paneling. the fabric is a little thicker, which is not as breathable in 100 degree weather, but makes the pants more durable. The new hidden pockets (used to be cargo pockets) have their pluses and minuses, so it depends what you are looking for, but the current style is nice.

Great pants

Just tested these pants on a month long canoe and back packing trip. Traveled thru very dense forest (bush pushing), swamp lands, and mild rivers. These pants held up very well. Never had a problem with the zippers, any other closures, or durability of fabric. The built-in-belt may get twisted within the pant itself but it does not change the comfort level at all. The soft patch in the upper-rear of the pants (interior) is great for carrying heavy loads with no irritation or chafing. I am a 31 inch waist with a 31 inch inseam and wear Medium Regulars. They are a little big (mostly in the waist) but I like the freedom of movement and synching down the best solves this problem. Highly recommended for all levels of adventurers.

I'm a thick dude and these pants fit perfectly. I put these pants to the test this weekend attempting the four pass loop in Aspen CO. IT was the wettest weekend I've experienced in a long time, not to mention crossing snow fields and high river crossings. These pant's were not soaked easily and when they were, they dried quickly. They will be a necessity from here on out, did I mention they were comfortable as well?

Oversized, buyer beware!

First off, I'm not a fan of baggy pants. So when I found out that the waist of these zip-off hiking pants is at least 2" oversized and the shorts come down to my kneecaps, I was pretty disappointed. I even followed their online sizing guide before ordering. They're a pretty heavy-duty design, too, which may actually be what you're looking for. On a positive note, the pockets are fantastic.

These are one of the most comfortable pants I ever owned. I like the style the way they fit me and a color, also I like the fact that you convert them into shorts big plus for me. Only down fall,they are little bit pricey.

MHW Matterhorn pants.
i've had 2 pair of these pants going on 4 years now, i've worn them for everything from out on the town to rock climbing, backpacking, hiking and winter camping. not a tear or broken thread yet, they do shed a light rain for a short period of time, but dry fast. the first day i bought these pants i spilled a 20 ounce coke, every drop right in my lap sitting in my car. not a drop soaked through and didn't even show a stain. super pants!

Best "adventure" pants ever

These pants were made for me. Perfect, relaxed fit. Plenty of room to move around when I'm active. I hate tight pants! I really like the side zippered and back pockets, but the pockets in front are a touch shallow, as previous mentioned. The hidden pull cord in the pant hem rocks! Great idea for battening down the hatches. Love the comfortable waistband. These pants dry quick and resist water pretty well. I own other "adventure"pants - Columbia, Rail Riders, REI, and other than Rail Riders, none of the other pants are even close to as well made as these Matterhorn beauties. To me, they feel a bit heavier than other brands of similar pants (might be hot when warmer out?), but they also feel more durable and rugged. I've already beat the heck out of these camping in the Black Canyon and I just love to wear them around town and around the house. The best!

Like the pants, do not like the belt

I like the pants - nice having all those pockets, and, though I've been skeptical of zip-off short type pants I have to admit the feature is pretty nice and works well. One thing - the belt in the edition I bought fall of 2010 is flimsy. In and of itself that's not a problem but what I've found is the belt will fold and twist and since it's built into the pants this results in a bulge, potentially against one's back while carrying a pack. My suggestion would be to make the belt with a stiffer material, so as to reduce this twisting effect.

Good Pant

I really like these pants! Way to go MH. You have a continous problem with your sizing because its all over the place with your pants. 1) quit with the s,m,l,xl becase you don't come close to getting it right. Stick to the sizing 30-40 ect. I find your specific waist size is good and dead on. As far as these pants are concerned you hit a home run with the quality.

Best Pants I Own

I bought a pair of these from a mark down online retailer. I wish I had purchased more than one pair! These pants are ideal, a little sturdier than my other hiking pants, perfect for warmer weather. The length of the shorts is long, when many converter pants look far too short when wearing as shorts. The only beef I have are the pockets as the zippered packets are at such an angle that it is easy for things to slide out of them when sitting and not zipped.

Great pants with one deal-breaking flaw

My North Face convertible pants have a thick waistband that gnaws my skin off under a hipbelt. The "seamless conical" waist was what drew me to MH's trail pants, and indeed, when the package showed up, the waist looked sumptuous. The problem is the front pockets. Granted, putting them out of the way of the hipbelt is a great idea, but they're too shallow for their primary purpose (for me, at least). I bought the TNF pants because a few years ago, my Gila Wilderness map fell out of the pocket on my REI convertible pants, and the equally shallow ones on the Matterhorns aren't much better. Maps are one of the top things backpackers keep in their pants pockets, and more or less the only thing I keep in mine. I'm baffled by MH's decision here; otherwise, they look like they would have been the best pants I'd ever owned.
Also, the "short" inseam is >30". At this price, I expect better.

well worth the cost

I bought these pants hoping that the belt was going to be more durable then the mesa pair i own and i received more then I could bargain for. The pants are heavier and over all more durable everywhere. I wear them every time I hike. Even though these pants cost more I believe they were well worth the price.

Great pants

I just love these pants. They are made for hiking or any other outdoor adventure. The position of the pockets is very convienent when wearing a day pack. I love the length of the inseam when they are shorts, some convertable pants have shorts that I consider too short. these pants are lightweight and very quick drying, and there is a draw string around the ankle that I use a lot. I can't find anything bad to say about these pants.

great choice for zip off trekking pants.

I shopped around a lot before mkaing this purchase, different brands, styles, materials etc. I couldnt be happier with these pants. I was worried they would be too short( i got the 34in inseam, im 6'5" and usually wear a 36 inseam) but they fit perfect. the lower section zips off and on really easy. i havent been able to get any water throuigh them yet.

These are simply the best quality hiking pants available. Streets better than similar North Face stuff (I have both).
